Daily Report
Las Vegas, May 6, 1997. Las Vegas was overcast this afternoon, with a few patches of blue in the sky. The temperature sign on top of the Horseshoe read 96 degrees when I got downtown around 3:00 PM, and was reading 95 degrees when I left around 9:00 PM tonight.
Smoking Survey: Deane Stonier, the winner of today's tournament was the only smoker at the final table.
While I was walking through the tournament area today, I heard Phil Helmuth say to some one at his pot limit holdem table: "That was brutal! You didn't have to think for two minutes before re-raising with Aces".
Sixty four year old Gene Fisher from El Paso TX captured my Final Table Best Dressed Award today. Gene who cashed for the third time this year, and pushed his total WSOP winnings over $600,000, looked the part of a cowboy Poker player from his Stetson to his boots, with black jeans and a long sleeve western shirt in between. Gene's mustache and weatherbeaten, chiseled face added to the western aura that this quiet, Texas gentleman radiates.
Jimmy Stefan, the popular head floorman at the Horseshoe, who has been ill for several weeks, made an appearance at the WSOP today. Jimmy looked good and said that he was feeling much better.

PENALTY BOX

There weren't any infractions that resulted in a penalty during the last 24 hours.

The WSOP Floorpeople are strictly enforcing the rules, with zero tolerance. Although no official list of violators is maintained, Steve Morrow, Head Assistant Tournament Co-ordinator, advises me that all of the following have received a 20 minute penalty during the 1997 WSOP. Most of the penalties were for using abusive language or throwing cards.

Binion's still had some of their 1997 WSOP commemorative coins ($20 + tax) available today. As long as they are available, I will purchase a coin(s) for anyone who will pick them up COD from me in Las Vegas sometime in the near future. I don't want to get into the mailing business though. They don't have a whole lot of them left.
The web site for the live WSOP TV feed "www.wsop.com" is still on a maybe next day basis, and I don't think that Binion's Las Vegas web site is up yet either.
Jack McClelland gave the new big bet Poker book by Cloutier and McEvoy a plug when Tom McEvoy was at the final table recently. This book is carried by Conjelco, as well as the new book on the same subject by Ciaffone and Reuben.

This is, and has been a very enjoyable experience, as well as an unbelievable grind for me. The first week of the WSOP, I was putting in 20 hour days. Now, with a little more familiarity with the required routine, I am only working about 18 - 19 hours a day on the WSOP. I can assure you that I will never undertake anything like this again. My prime motivation has been to provide a worthwhile service to my friends in the Poker world.

SINGLE TABLE SATELLITES

There weren't any featured satellites today, since tomorrow's Two to Seven lowball tournament has never generated enough demand for satellites.

$320 buy-in no-limit single tables continue to be run every day. These are ten handed, players start with $1,200 in chips, and the winner gets six $500 tournament chips + $100 cash.

$10,000 No-Limit single table satellites are scheduled for 4:00 and 6:00 PM daily. Ten players buy-in for $1,010 each and receive $4,000 in chips. Blinds start at $50 and $100. Humberto Brenes and Pascal Perrault won seats in single table events yesterday.

SUPER SATELLITES

The No-Limit Super Satellites start at 8:30 PM each evening. Last night there were 12 ten handed tables competing for $10,000 Final Event seats and cash. Buy-ins are $220 for $200 in chips, and re-buys can be made for $200 during the first hour of play. Blinds start at $5/10 and increase every 20 minutes. There were 157 entrants, who made a total of 164 re-buys last night. Here are last nights pay outs:

Joel Chaseman, Marsha Waggoner, Randy Holland, Maria Stern and Gary Benson (repeat winner) each won a $10,000 seat for the final championship event plus $511 in cash.
6.11 - $500 tournament chips + $180 cash

HELP !!!!

I am looking for a 1997 WSOP $10,000 Championship Event participator who will allow me to unobtrusively sweat him/her (and record for posterity, in detail, all of her/his hole cards and how he/she played them) through to victory or elimination. Jim Albrecht has sanctioned this project, and CARDPLAYER is interested in doing an article on this subject.

ALL I NEED IS A VOLUNTEER.

Reasons for Volunteering:

  1. I will emanate positive vibes to the Poker God in her/his behalf.
  2. I might distract the competition more than him/her.
  3. The Volunteer may play better than otherwise, since her/his play will become a public record.
  4. Good P. R. for the Volunteer.
  5. The knowledge that opponents may gain about his/her playing style can be manipulated to her/his advantage in the future.

    John Hom finishes 2nd and Deane Stonier wins the $3,000 Omaha High-Low Split WSOP Championship at 8:30 PM.

Missing Picture Deane Stonier, a longhaul transportation broker and "casual" poker player who said he felt "outclassed," defeated 120 competitors to win the $3,000 buy in Omaha High-Low Split event. It was the first major tournament win for the 59 year-old Floridian, and it brought him $145,000 and a 14-karat gold World Series winner's bracelet.

"It's a big thrill for me, because I know really that I'm outclassed at the World Series. I've made a few final tables -- one here two years ago in seven card high-low split -- but I've never gone all the way," Stonier said. "My goal today was to get to fourth or fifth. I had a good feel at the final table, and when I saw the others playing very tight early on, I was able to steal some pots. Omaha high-low is by far my worst game."

Stonier almost didn't come to the Horseshoe, but he found he had three days free so flew in, playing two events without making the money, "Then I got lucky, which you've got to do in this game. The title and the bracelet mean a lot to me."

Stonier, a former U.S. Air Force officer, said he plays only home poker games and a few tournaments a year.

He took the title from tournament veteran John Hom after a punch-counterpunch heads-up battle which saw three lead changes in 48 minutes. Stonier twice clawed his way back from dangerously low chip positions and then, scooping two pots with full houses, took the lead for good. Hom survived the penultimate hand dramatically, flopping a pair of jacks which became four jacks on the river, which had spectators roaring. But Stonier ended it with A-A-Q-6 against Hom's all-in K-8-6-3 when the board showed K-7-2/J-4, a high-low scoop.

"I feel real good, playing almost at the top of my game," said Hom, a 47 year-old geotechnical engineer who came to the United States from his native China in 1954. "I did the best I could at Omaha high-low which is not really my game. I can't complain." Hom, who describes himself as a "regular tournament junkie," collected $72,600 for second place, bringing his total WSOP winnings to $90,135 "The tournament was beautifully run," he said. "Jack McClelland runs a great show."

Third place went to poker professional Jeff Pierce, the $36,300 bringing his earnings from five WSOP money finishes to $62,407. "This made me even at the World Series," said Pierce, 41, who worked as a busboy when he first came to Las Vegas 20 years ago, In 13 years as a pro, he said he is still looking for his first tournament win. "Yesterday I had all the cards," said Pierce, who began as chip leader at the final table. "Today I had no cards. I'm lucky to finish where I did." After surviving with a river wheel against Hom's nut flush, Pierce was all in for a $70,000 pot holding 4-4-2-3 against Hom's A-K-J-6. He was eliminated with a board of K-Q-9/J-A.

Redoubtable veteran Gene Fisher collected $23,595 for fourth place, the third time he has been in the money thus far this year and the 24th since he began attending every World Series 21 years ago. "I feel pretty good, but it's always disappointing not to finish in the top two or three," said the 64 year-old Fisher. He has two gold bracelets, one runner-up finish, and four third places to his credit, with total earnings of $604,260 Going all-in blind before the flop after losing most of his chips, Fisher found he had 10-9-8-6 against Stonier's A-A-K-10 which scooped the pot.

Jason Gray, an English professional making his second final table at this WSOP, finished fifth -- just as he did four nights ago in the $2,500 stud event. "I can't break out of fifth place," he said ruefully, "but I'll keep trying." All-in with K-K-4-3, he ran in to Fisher's A-A-7-3 and was knocked out.

The 1987 Women's World Champion, Linda Ryke Drucker, took sixth place prize money of $12,705 which sent her soaring from 29th to 15th place in the Women's Top Money Winners list. This was her second final table this year and her fifth time in the money at the World Series where she has now earned $39,789.

Seventh place went to tournament veteran Monte Kouz, holder of a gold bracelet among his 12 in-the-money finishes here. He has won $190,754 at the WSOP since 1983.

Germany's Matthias Rohnacher, Pot Limit Omaha champion three nights ago, finished eighth and added $7,260 to his World Series winnings which now total $386,925. This was his 14th time in the money, eight of them at the final table.

Another 1997 title holder, John Cernuto, finished ninth, forced to make an early, and unsuccessful, move from lowest initial chip position. Winner of the $2,000 No Limit Hold'em event last week, Cernuto has won $611,040 in 14 times in the money at the World Series. He has two gold bracelets and has been at nine final tables.

Tonight's final table, lasting almost exactly four and a half hours, was the longest thus far this year.
