Daily Report
Las Vegas, May 5, 1997. It got hot here in Las Vegas today. It was a sunny day, and the temperature sign on top of the Horseshoe read 97 degrees at 1:30 PM.
Smoking Survey: Jim Meehan was the only full time smoker at the final table. He was also a considerate smoker. He had an anti-smoker fan that he used to direct his smoke upward when he was smoking.

Lap Ki Wan, who finished 3rd in today's tournament, bummed a cigarette frm Jim late in the tournament, and smoked at least some of it. Lap's Holdem game got looser and looser, and he was in a very festive mood in the latter stages of the tournament, possibly influenced to some extent by several helpings of Heinekens.

PENALTY BOX

The WSOP Floorpeople are strictly enforcing the rules, with zero tolerance. Although no official list of violators is maintained, Steve Morrow, Head Assistant Tournament Co-ordinator, advises me that all of the following have received a 20 minute penalty during the 1997 WSOP. Most of the penalties were for using abusive language or throwing cards.

Binion's still had some of their 1997 WSOP commemorative coins ($20 + tax) available today. As long as they are available, I will purchase a coin(s) for anyone who will pick them up COD from me in Las Vegas sometime in the near future. I don't want to get into the mailing business though. They don't have a whole lot of them left.
The web site for the live WSOP TV feed "www.wsop.com" is still on a maybe next day basis, and I don't think that Binion's Las Vegas web site is up yet either.

SINGLE TABLE SATELLITES

Today's featured single table satellite, being run by Becky Kerber and Barbara Lotief, was Pot Limit Holdem which will be tomorrow's tournament. Ten players buy-in for $320 each, receive $1,200 in chips and compete for six $500 tournament chips + $100 cash.

$320 buy-in no-limit single tables continue to be run every day. These are ten handed and the winner gets six $500 tournament chips + $100 cash.

A sign-up list was started today for $10,000 No-Limit single table satellites, with daily starting times of 4:00 and 6:00 PM. Ten players buy-in for $1,010 each and receive $4,000 in chips. Blinds start at $50 and $100.

SUPER SATELLITES

The No-Limit Super Satellites that are very ably run by Patty Hughes and Rudy Lotief, start at 8:30 PM each evening. Last night there were 12 ten handed tables competing for $10,000 Final Event seats and cash. Buy-ins are $220 for $200 in chips, and re-buys can be made for $200 during the first hour of play. Blinds start at $5/10 and increase every 20 minutes. There were 136 entrants, who made a total of 147 re-buys last night. Here are last nights pay outs:

    Jim Meehan finishes 2nd and Louis J. Asmo wins the $3,000 Limit Holdem WSOP Championship at 8:29 PM.

Louis J. Asmo, a travel agent and relative newcomer to hold'em, survived a wild final table to capture the title in the $3,000 buy in Limit Hold'em event. For his victory over still another WSOP record field, Asmo collected $231,600 and a 14-karat gold winner's bracelet by Neiman Marcus.

"I feel marvelous," enthused the 51 year-old player who had never won a major tournament and had played his first hand of hold'em in July, 1995 ("I lost $116"). "I came here expecting to win a couple of tournaments and then the main Championship Event. Now I'm on my way." Asmo, the fourth American-born winner thus far this year, was the second Italian-American after John Cernuto.

"Poker is my avocation," Asmo said. "I come from a poker-playing family, so I grew up playing the game."

At the final table, which saw some remarkable hands and six chip-lead changes, Asmo said, "I had three bad beats. What I'm proudest of is that it was supposed to send me packing, but I just got meaner." He also acknowledged having a dramatic "good beat" which effectively stole the title from eventual runner-up Jim Meehan. That came with three players remaining: After a flop of J-10-8, Meehan,with a dominating chip lead, had two pair -- tens and eights. Asmo, holding Q-J, flopped top pair. Re-raise followed raise on the flop and turn card, a meaningless four. The river queen gave Asmo the higher two pair.

In their seesawing 45-minute heads-up battle, Asmo finally secured the lead for good after a key hand in which he flopped K-4-4 to his K-4 and took a major pot after slow-playing. He thought that flop and his "miracle" river queen represented "my good fortune" after suffering bad beats.

The most memorable, which had the onlookers gasping,came when Asmo with pocket kings flopped top set against Meehan's pocket aces. A river ace gave Meehan a huge pot.

The final hand saw Asmo's A-8 beat Meehan's 4-4 with a board of A-J-9/7-K.

Meehan, a 45 year-old attorney, collected $115,800 -- his largest tournament win -- but said, "I'm very disappointed not to win. But I'm grateful to be alive." An occasional tournament player for the past three years, Meehan flew in yesterday for this event. "The only reason I got to the final table was because the deck blew up in my face," he said. He praised the "great players" at the final table.

Third place and $57,900 went to Lap Ki Wan,36, who worked in his family's jewelery business in his native Hong Kong before moving to California and becoming a full-time poker player five years ago. His exuberant antics enlivened action at the final table. "I'm very happy with this finish on my first trip to the World Series,"Lap said. "The tournament is very good for players, because they can make big money." He was eliminated going all in with A-2 against Meehan's A-K with a board of K-J-l0/9-8. His adventures included surviving an earlier bout with Meehan by making a gutshot straight and then winning a $50,000 pot with king high.

Tom Cage, a 38 year-old owner of a ski shop, took fourth and $37,635, his largest ever tournament win and his first time in the money on eight trips to the World Series. A "serious player but not a pro," Cage said, "I would have felt better finishing third. I made some mistakes at the final table a more seasoned player wouldn't make. I could have played better." He was knocked out in a $80,000 pot, going all-in with A-5 against Asmo's pocket nines, when the board showed 8-3-2/3-7.

Fifth place went to tournament veteran Eric Seidel, who thereby became the 18th millionaire at the World Series and moved past Men Nguyen into 17th place on the Top Money Winners list. Seidel's earnings now total $1,013,876. This was the 14th time in the money for Seidel, 37, who said, "I'm disappointed -- I would have liked to be in the top three." After finishing second to Johnny Chan in the 1988 Championship Event, Seidel went on to win three gold bracelets. He has made ten final tables.

Walter Threadgill took sixth place, his sixth finish in the money at the WSOP where his earnings have now reached $93,492. He was knocked out in an extraordinary three-way hand in which both he and Lap held pocket queens against Meehan's pocket aces which stood up against a board of 8-8-5/2-K, with two hearts on the flop and a third on the turn. They were both drawing dead, since one of Meehan's aces was the heart.

Seventh place went to Blair Rodman, initial final table chip leader, who was eliminated with three nines and a king kicker by Seidel's nine-five in the blind which made nines full of fives. This was Rodman's fourth final table in eight finishes in the money at the WSOP where his winnings now total $64,682.

Sam Grizzle finished eighth, bringing his overall earnings to $25,585 in five times in the money.

Ninth place went to Scott Mayfield, the fourth place finisher in the 1985 Championship Event, who has earned $83,522 in four WSOP money finishes.

In the first 13 events this year, 13 of the top 20 WSOP all-time money winners have cashed.
