Two Women

By Mike Paulle

For the first time in recent memory, two women came to the final table as the chip leaders. If either held on, they would be the first female to win an entry into the Tournament of Champions.

Another record attendance was set today as 436 players signed up for the Limit Hold'em event. That was 8 more than last year's record. The total prize pool was $87,200.

When Archie Sims turned trip Kings it was all over for Skip Elliot's A 10. Elliott Skip-ed taking any money by finishing 31st. There were thirty players left, all of whom were in the money.

To set up the final table, Shelley Carr flopped two pair with Q J to run over Norm Berliner's A Q and send him to the sidelines in 11th.

Dave Crunkleton lost most of his chips early to Mike Heintschel when the flop came K K 8.The turn was a Queen and the river a blank. Betting all the way, Dave had Mike almost all-in.In the showdown, Heintschel turned over A Q for a gutsy call. With few chips left, Crunkleton raised Craig DiSalvo's blind $600 with a Q 10. It wasn't enough to make Craig lay down J 5. When a 5 came on the flop, Crunkleton crumpled into 10th.

Chuck Berry needed some help from "Mabeline." His flops couldn't be true. When Chuck went all-in with A K, it was Mike Heintschel again who called with pocket 5's. Chuck rock and rolled into 9th when nothing came on board.

Joe Burke and Jerry Klick sat side by side as low stacks hoping the other would go out first. In the five seat, Burke had to go through the blinds first and couldn't make it. All-in with 9 4, he was a sitting duck for John Parge's A 2.

Jerry Klick played better today with $9,000 in chips than he did yesterday with $73,000. Finally, all-in with K J of Hearts, it was Jennifer Harman's A 6 of Spades that Klick-ed when an Ace flopped. Jerry flopped into 7th place. All teasing aside, Jerry made his third final table counting both day and evening events, so he probably can really play poker even if he is from Ohio.

John Parge made the mistake of tangling with the female sheriff in town, Jennifer Harman. His all-in J 10 was gunned down by Jennifer's K Q when a King came. Parge was 6th.

Not learning from John Parge's mistake, Mike Heintschel made the same mistake. Raising with Q 10, he got himself reraised all-in by Harman's pocket 10's. So long, cowboy.

Now there were four and the women were still the chip leaders. The guys were short-stacked.

Craig DiSalvo wanted a save. No deal, man person. He finally got Joe DeFranza to do a side deal of the Italian boy's club. They saved each other 1,000,000 lira or $1,000.

It was good timing for DiSalvo, `cause he couldn't get de-saved from Jennifer Harman. His 6's were deep-sixed by Jennifer's A 8 when a Ace flopped. Craig took 4th like a former alter boy should, with equanimity. "I played my heart out," Craig said.

Only one male to dispose of. That would be Joe DeFranza. All-in for the small blind with 4 2, he had a moment of hope when a 4 came on the flop against (who else) Jennifer Harman's K 6. A King on the turn rid the final table of the vainer sex and set up the superior player's showdown.

After going off on a private meeting, The women came back to the table to announce "no deal." Jennifer Harman had a 5-2 chip lead and didn't have to be generous. She was hot and knew it. If she needed any confirmation, in one of the first hands, Harman flopped the nuts with A K of Clubs.

That took most of Shelley Carr's remaining chips. Soon, Shelley made a move when an Ace came on the flop. Harman had Kings and put Carr all-in. The Kings held up and Shelley's Carr sputtered into the runner-up driveway.
