Daily Report
Las Vegas, May 1, 1997. It's hazier (make that read smoggier) today than normal in Las Vegas, although the wind was gusting to around 30 mph this morning. Most of the wind was gone by noon, and the afternoon was another warm, beautiful spring day.
Smoking Survey: Final table smokers were "Eskimo" Clark, Andreas Fritz and Chris Truby. The most visible anti-smoker was David Ulliott, who was armed with one of the large, square, box-like fans. David also sported the first dark glasses that I remember at a final table this year. His had small, rectangular lenses, like the ones school teachers sometimes wore many years ago.
As I was transcribing the play-by-play data from yesterday's $2,000 Omaha High-Low Split final table, I was reminded that the posturing and post mortem analysis between players had seemed excessive to me. Winning, un-called hands were frequently shown down gratuitously, which was great for the spectators, but was probably detrimental to the prime showee.
Congratulations to rec.gambler Chris "Jesus" Ferguson who posted a 6th place finish in today's Pot Limit Holdem Event. I thought Chris played very well. But for a bad river card, he would have tripled through and would have finally had some chips to work with. Alas, it was not to be, and "Jesus" wasn't able to walk on the water. Chris has already won an entry into the final event, and will get a chance to improve on today's finish.
Binion's still had some of their 1997 WSOP commemorative coins ($20 + tax) available today. As long as they are available, I will purchase a coin(s) for anyone who will pick them up COD from me in Las Vegas sometime in the near future. I don't want to get into the mailing business though. They don't have a whole lot of them left.
The web site for the live WSOP TV feed (www.wsop.com) is still on a maybe next day basis, and I don't think that Binion's Las Vegas web site is up yet either.
I finally got around to doing the rest of the play-by-play transcribing for Event #4 ($1,500 7 Card Stud) that I had postponed doing. Unfortunately, I found that I had inadvertently taped over about an hour of play in the middle of the final table play. All of the data that was available, including the blackout, have now been posted here on the ConJelco web site.
Last night's no-limit super satellite had 12 ten handed tables competing for $10,000 Final Event seats and cash. Buy-ins are $220 for $200 in chips, and re-buys can be made for $200 during the first hour of play. Blinds start at $5/10 and increase every 20 minutes. Rudy Lotief, the super satellite guru, informed me that there were 155 entrants, who made a total of 147 re-buys last night. Here are last nights pay outs:

As of today there are 56 Entrants on the board for the $10,000 Final Event. 44 of those have won their seat at supers here at the Horseshoe, and most of the others were won in out of town tournaments. I don't see an obviously female name on the list yet.

Pot Limit Omaha, which will be played tomorrow, was the featured single table satellite today. Ten players buy-in for $270 each, receive $1,000 in chips and compete for five $500 tournament chips + $100 cash. Blinds start at $10/25.
Becky Kerber, the single table satellite specialist, said that they were also running $320 buy-in no-limit tables today. You start with $1200 in chips at $10/25 blinds and the winner gets Six $500 chips + $100 cash.

In the first all-British heads-up final in World Series history, David Ulliott caught a magic river card to win the $2,000 buy-in Pot Limit Hold'em title from his countryman Chris Truby. And they did it on Britain's election day.

The dramatic victory over a record field of 247 competitors was worth $180,310. Ulliott, a 44 year-old jeweler and regular tournament player in Europe and the U.S., was also awarded the gold WSOP winner's bracelet which he said would be engraved to his expert specifications.

This is Ulliott's first trip to the World Series and he came in riding a string of tournament successes since last June which included three big victories and two third place finishes. "It's good to win," he said simply. "Everything went nice and smoothly at the excellent final table. I just love the buzz -- the adrenalin rush -- of playing the game. And the World Series is fantastic -- the atmosphere, the money, the great action."

Ulliott is known in poker circles as "Devil Fish," a nickname given him by Chinese opponents in Birmingham, England referring to a Chinese culinary delicacy which, if not properly prepared, can kill whoever eats it.

The two Britons were about even in chips when they went heads up, and five minutes later came the climactic final hand, a hold'em classic: Truby with a pair of sevens , bet $60,000 on the flop of 7h-5h-3s. Ulliott, holding A-4 of hearts, re-raised to put him all in, making it a $400,000 pot with top set pitted against a flush and straight draw. The turn card was the meaningless diamond king, and then the river -- the deuce of spades to give the taciturn Ulliott his first World Series bracelet and his largest ever tournament prize.

Truby, 46, the owner of a property management business, collected $93,860 which was also his biggest win. "I'm thrilled," he said. "I think I was very fortunate -- I hit some solid hands and they stood up. In fact, nothing went wrong until the very last hand." Like Ulliott, Truby has played pot limit almost exclusively, as is the custom in Great Britain.

Because he did so well, Truby, who had to fly home hours after the event, said he might well come back to enter the WSOP championship. "I think the World Series is the most fabulous poker event there is," he said, "and it's extremely well run."

The last American to make a run at the British was Tom McEvoy, the 1983 World Champion who, with his third place finish, became the 17th World Series millionaire. This $46,930, his 20th time in the money and third already this year, moved him into 16th place on the WSOP Top Money Winners list. McEvoy, author and columnist about to appear with a new book on championship pot-limit and no-limit hold'em, said, "I thought both British players played superbly. I'm very happy that I'm currently playing well. I'm living proof that the strategy in the book works-- even if I didn't go all the way,"

McEvoy, 52, was finally all-in with 5h-4h against Ulliott's pair of eights. He flopped an open-ended straight flush draw, 7h-6h-5s, but got no further help.

Fourth place went to Richard Chase, 48, the retired owner of an international media-based barter company, who said, I"m happy with my finish. They were all more experienced in pot limit, which I've only played a handful of times." He decided that "timing is everthing -- my big hands won only blinds." Chase praised the new two-day WSOP format because "everyone plays better when they're rested. I think it works well."

Stan Goldstein, runner-up in last year's $2,500 pot limit event and the chip leader at start of final table play, finished fifth when his pair of sevens lost to McEvoy's A-Q, a queen falling on the turn. This was Goldstein's second in-the-money placing at this WSOP and his earnings now total $126,458.

Another tournament regular, Chris Ferguson, survived from lowest initial chip position to sixth place, which brought his WSOP winnings to $66,296 in five money finishes.

Eskimo Clark, the 1992 Seven Card Stud champion, took seventh place, his 11th time in the money.

George Hartley, a WSOP newcomer, finished eighth and Andreas Fritz, making his second final table this year, was ninth.
