Daily Report
Las Vegas, May 2, 1997. Another beautiful spring day in Lss Vegas. Very little wind, sunny with more clouds than normal, a little haze, and a high temperature in the mid 80's.
Smoking Survey: No smokers at today's final table.
Today's best dressed player at the final table award goes to Dr Willard L. Noyes who looked very sharp in a business suit with a white mandarin type shirt.
Oddity of the day: Midway through the heads-up play between Vasilis Lazarou and Caesar Como, the dealer stunned everyone by dealing the 5th street cards in counter clockwise order.
Binion's still had some of their 1997 WSOP commemorative coins ($20 + tax) available today. As long as they are available, I will purchase a coin(s) for anyone who will pick them up COD from me in Las Vegas sometime in the near future. I don't want to get into the mailing business though. They don't have a whole lot of them left.
The web site for the live WSOP TV feed "www.wsop.com" is still on a maybe next day basis, and I don't think that Binion's Las Vegas web site is up yet either.
A camera crew from Germany has been filming in the final table area for a documentary on the WSOP for the European market.
Darryl "Razzo" Phillips and Jon Wetzel have made appearances in the final table Press area during the WSOP. Both are expert dealers at the Mirage, and big Poker boosters via their Poker oriented web sites. Darryl's url is "www.pokerwwworld.com" and Jon's is "www.pokercentral.com".
7 Card Stud 8 or Better, which will be played tomorrow, was the featured single table satellite today. Eight players buy-in for $335 each, receive $1,000 in chips and compete for five $500 tournament chips + $100 cash.

Becky Kerber, the single table satellite specialist, said that they were also running $320 buy-in no-limit and limit tables today. You start with $1200 in chips at $10/25 blinds and the winner gets Six $500 chips + $100 cash.

Last night's no-limit super satellite had 12 ten handed tables competing for $10,000 Final Event seats and cash. Buy-ins are $220 for $200 in chips, and re-buys can be made for $200 during the first hour of play. Blinds start at $5/10 and increase every 20 minutes. Rudy Lotief, the super satellite guru, informed me that there were 149 entrants, who made a total of 147 re-buys last night. Here are last nights pay outs:

Ken Sahek, Cal Dykes, Alex Horowitz, Thomas Sparks and Monte Kouz each won a $10,000 seat for the final championship event plus $331 in cash.
6.6 - $500 tournament chips + $680 cash
7.4 - $500 tournament chips + $116 cash
8.1 - $500 tournament chip + $604 cash
9.1 - $500 tournament chip + $144 cash

*** Caesar Como finishes 2nd and Vasilis Lazarou wins the $2500 7 Card Stud WSOP Championship at 7:28 PM.

Final Table Chip Standings - Seat Positions

Missing Picture
E xtending the unprecedented success of international competitors at this World Series of Poker, Greek-born Vasilis Lazarou scored a convincing, often dominating victory in the $2,500 buy in Seven Card Stud event. Already the holder of a 1990 stud title, Lazarou, 41, collected $169,000 for this one and another 14-karat gold winner's bracelet.

"I feel great. I hope this will make my mother and father back in Greece very proud of me," said Lazarou who came to this country in 1985 and now owns two clothing stores in Las Vegas. "Gambling is in my family," he said. "I played Greek poker in our small village and then when I came here I watched my uncle, Sam, play. He's the master -- he taught me stud." In 1986 Sam Mastrogiannis won two WSOP titles himself, and he finished 13th in this event behind his nephew.

Native-born Americans have won just three of the first ten WSOP events this year. Lazarou's triumph over another record field was his fourth final table and ninth time in the money in seven years. "I think the World Series is the best thing ever for gamblers -- it gives everybody an opportunity to win some money."

Lazarou, who describes himself as a poker professional, said he "mostly played my opponents' hands as I usually do, and all the way through it was quite easy." He lost the final table chip lead just twice to runner-up Caesar Como, 72, a retired U.S. Navy chief petty officer who collected $84,500, his biggest-ever tournament prize money. "I feel all right, but I would have felt better if I'd won," Como said. "I tried to change strategy but I couldn't get him to move when we were heads up."

For the last half of their hourlong struggle, Como fought against an overwhelming chip lead. He was finally all in with Ac-8/6c-7c-4-Qc-3s, missing the flush and straight and losing to Lazarou's pair of kings (10-4/A-K-Q-K-5).

"They were all very good players at the final table," Como said. "I respect all poker players -- they're the best people in the world." He said he has played at every World Series since the beginning in 1970 and, as usual, would follow it this year with a poker-playing trip around the country.

Jeff Burdsall, a 54 year-old retired attorney, finished third and collected $42,250 for his fifth time in the money at the WSOP, including two placings in the Championship Event. "I'm disappointed," he said. "I certainly thought I had a shot. Tournaments baffle me. I keep trying, I do a lot of reading trying to put my finger on it. There's very little relationship between tournaments and money poker. The tournament format obviates the skills of money poker." He was eliminated when his starting pair of aces did not improve while Lazarou caught a second pair to his starting jacks.

Fourth place and $25,350 went to tournament veteran John Bonetti, 68, who ranks ninth on the World Series millionaires' list, has three gold bracelets, two runner-up placings and two third-place finishes in the Championship Event. "I just couldn't hold a hand at the final table," he said. "But I'm never displeased with any finish in the money." He was knocked out when he missed a straight and flush against Burdsall's pair of kings.

Jason Gray, 30, an "unemployed poker player in London," took fifth place money of $21,125, his biggest tournament win. But he said, "I'm disappointed. I thought I had a shot to win for sure. The World Series is great -- the best tournament in the world."

He was preceded out by another European player, Lothar Landauer, 36, a poker regular and businessman who won the 1994 European stud championship at Baden , Austria. He is active in promoting tournament poker in Europe.

Dr. Willard Noyes, unable to noticeably increase his smallest chip stack when final table action began, was eliminated in eighth place.

Through the first ten events, players from 31 American states and at least 16 countries have finished in the money. Titles have gone to competitors (including two women) born in Korea, France, Cuba, Sweden, Vietnam, Britain, Greece and the U.S. Nevada with 59 and California with 38 top the list of in-the-money finishers, as do Britain with eight and Germany with six.
