The Final Table Official Results The Evening Tournament |
Power FailureBy Mike PaulleNo one could put the all-ins away today, so the band played on--and on--and on. There were 294 players today for the Omaha Hi-Lo event. The total prize pool was $58,800. When Mike Sexton saw Bernard Treynet's nut-nut hand, he mucked his. Bernard may wonder why he doesn't get a TOC entry. There were now 24 players left, all of whom were in the money. To set up the final table, Mike Mahan's Kings and Jacks cracked Edy Subarsky's Aces leaving Edy in 11th.
David Rabbi had A A suited twice in a row and lost them both. "This is a meshugenah tournament," David said only half joking. Mike Mahan threw the Rabbi out in the street in 10th. Charles Schacher was next only he lost to A A held by Geno Davis. Schacher was 9th. For the next hour and a half, it got tough. Kurt Newell was keeping count. "The all-in hand has won the last 15 times in a row. Is that a record?" No won knew, but it must be close. "I'm bored. I have other things to do. Let's make a deal," Kurt said Kurt-ly. The chip disparity made a deal too hard to figure so, the band played on. Finally, there was movement. Peter Kaufman went all-in with an Ace small. Geno Davis called with two Kings. No Ace, no low, no Kaufman. Now there were seven. But Geno Davis still had too many chips to make a deal. Oscar Abdoulah lost to Richard Korbin's Heart flush. When Oscar's low didn't appear, Abdoulah disappeared in 7th. It took the elimination of the funniest writer in poker and my personal idol, Max Shapiro, to get a deal done. Short on chips, Max raised the big blind with A 3 4 6. Mike Mahan turned over a surprising A 2 K K. When the flop came Q J 10, Shapiro could only "Read 'Em And Laugh." Even with Barbara Enright's relentless coaching, Max could only manage a 6th place finish. Finally, a deal could be negotiated. The low stack, Richard Korbin was guaranteed $4,600. Mike Mahan, Kurt Newell and Barry Bindelglass saved $6,000 each and chip leader Geno Davis couldn't make less than $8,000. They played for the rest and the TOC entry. Geno Davis took care of everyone from here on. He eliminated Mahan and Bindelglass in one hand with trip 10's. Richard Korbin was next when he couldn't beat a pair of 9's. Trailing in chips by over 10-1, Kut Newell somehow got an extra $2,600 from Geno Davis to lay down is itty-bity stack. What a deal! Davis settled for $20,000 straight and the TOC entry.
11th-20th received $441 Edy Subarsky, Matt Lefkowitz, Bernard Treynet, Cliff Marx, Hasan Habib, Kevin Lewis, Howard Mann, Rit Radford, J L Jones and Bob Thompson. 21st-24th received $294 John Cernuto, Charlie Sharkady, Bo De and James Farrell.
Jamshed Bokhari took 1st place in a heads up duel with Ken Sutton. The final two players agreed to an extra $500 for the 2nd place finisher.
