Smoking Survey: Eli Balas was the only smoker at the final table.
Binion's still had some of their 1997 WSOP commemerative coins available today. I have been purchasing several coins each of the last few days for people who asked, providing they will take delivery from me in Las Vegas. Binion's states in one of their coin announcements that a maximum of two coins may be bought per person, but I have been buying several at a time, with no problem. Today, they said I could only have two, but we compromised and after they sold me two, I stepped outside the door, came back in and bought two more, and repeated that procedure a couple of more times.
This was a very straight forward, no nonsense, business like final table relative to previous ones. However there was one lighter moment worthy of note: The cocktail waitress was in the area, and Jack McClelland asked if any of the players would care to order some liquid refreshments at that time (or something to that effect), and after no one spoke up, Ivan Trepner, a young looking senior citizen who was the chip leader when they started final table play and finished fourth, finally said "I don't want anything, but bring a round of scotch for my friends".
When Ivan Trepner was undergoing his exit interview with Don Larrimore, who writes the daily report handout for Binion's (which appears in the side bar column as part of Conjelco's coverage), I heard him say that this was only the second time he had ever played 7 Card 8 or better, but that he had developed a strategy that greatly simplified the game. I talked with Ivan later and confirmed that his only previous experience had been in a small tournament, and he said that his system or strategy was proprietary, but he indicated that it was built around observations he had made concerning danger hands that bust players out of tournaments. Ivan said he was going to further test his theories in the $2,500 event. As I understand it, his system is to avoid hands that will bust you out of a tournament. What an easy game.
More out of town rg'ers who dropped by my home-away-from-home at the final table area to say hello recently: Chris Ferguson, J. R. Reed, Bill Turner, Keith Fichtemaier, Jeff Woods, J. P. Massar, Kim Scheinberg and John Kullman.
Last story of the day: A rg'er, who shall remain unidentified to protect his reputation, who had been playing in a daily tournament, came over and joined me while I was getting ready for the final table of the day. I asked him if he had busted out of the tournament, and he said, that he was still in it. Then I asked how long was the break, and he said he wasn't on break, but that an inept dealer that he couldn't stand was at his table, and that he always took his own private break anytime that this dealer came to his table.

Missing Picture Doug Saab, a genial Alabaman, became the first American man to capture a title at this World Series of Poker, powering to victory over 237 competitors in the Seven Card High-Low split event. Along with first prize money of $130,305, he was awarded the 14-karat gold WSOP winner's bracelet which, he said, "carries more prestige than the money. It's something nobody can take away from me."

This was the biggest tournament win ever for Saab, a 47 year-old retired insurance executive who now works in the gaming industry and plays regularly on the U.S. poker circuit. He had won the championship in this event at the 1989 Hall of Fame at Binion's.

"It's exciting to come to Vegas and play against the best in the world, and walk away with a championship," Saab said. "I had a good run of cards and no real serious beats all the way through the tournament." With this fourth in-the-money WSOP finish, his total winnings are now $142,442.

When Saab went heads up against Bernie Rosenthal, he held almost a two-to-one chip lead which he relinquished only once, briefly, before scooping a huge pot with kings and fives against Rosenthal's solitary pair of kings. From then on Saab's lead was never threatened. Rosenthal was finally all in, again with kings which didn't improve against Saab's victorious jacks and sixes.

Rosenthal, the 66 year-old president of a social service agency for people with disabilities, collected $67,830 and was delighted: "Wait until my wife hears about this! I feel great. I came out here with no expectations. I think the World Series is fantastic. For me, competing here is like playing at Wimbledon or the Masters. And I enjoy the spirit and the hospitality of the people at the Horseshoe."

This was Rosenthal's fourth trip to the World Series and his first time in the money. He said he has played poker since he was a teenager, "once or twice a week, and only for enjoyment. And at this tournament, I felt relaxed-- just getting to the final table was a tremendous victory and it helped me feel comfortable." He said of the winner, "Doug played fabulously."

Third place prize money of $33,915 went to local poker professional Eli Balas who has one gold bracelet and two runner-up finishes among his 11 placings in the money at the WSOP. His earnings now total $387,432. After surviving three all-in bets as the shortest stack with three remaining players, he was eliminated with a pair of sixes when Saab caught trip threes.

Ivan Trepner, 63, who said he had only played seven card high-low once before, collected $21,420 for fourth place. Trepner, once the oldest ski instructor in the U.S., describes himself as a "retired ski and boat bum who plays poker." This finish, his fourth in the money at the WSOP, brought his winnings to $88,170. "I started the final table with the chip lead, had playable cards the first hand, and couldn't get one starting hand after that," he said. "I was always drawing and never got there." Trepner, too, was eliminated by Saab, who held aces and a seven low against kings and an eight low.

Fifth place went to Pete Dixon, 48, a regular on the poker tournament circuit who won the seven card stud high event at the 1991 Hall of Fame and has been in the money at the WSOP seven times for a total of $71,833. He said he was disappointed with his final-table play in this discipline.

Jim Bucci, who finished sixth, was more upbeat as he collected his prize money from World Series Tournament Coordinator Jack McClelland: "I'm not discouraged. I'm going to win a lot more here this year," he said. This brought Bucci's WSOP earnings total to $55,975.

Hieu "Tony" Ma, the current WSOP Limit Hold'em champion, finished seventh. The poker veteran's WSOP winnings now total $265,670.

Eighth place went to another tournament regular, Mel Judah who, with one gold bracelet and two runner-up finishes among his 14 times in the money here, has won $377,391.
