Daily Report
Las Vegas, April 26, 1997. Another beautiful day in Las Vegas. Sunny with a light breeze and a high temperature in the 80's

Smokers Note: There were two smokers at today's final table in the 7 card stud event. One was Maria Stern who captured the title, and ironically her seat was next to Joe Macchiaverna who always carries and often wears a gas mask while playng poker. Today he had his mask with him, but did not put it on. Instead he relied on a standard anti-smoker fan for protection from the smoke.

Binion's still had some of their 1997 WSOP commemerative coins available today.

Vive La France

I enjoy playing poker and I enjoy watching other people play poker. I have spectated at major and minor tournaments, high and low limit side action games, satellites, regular casino games and home games. Since 1994 when we moved to Las Vegas, I have seen most of the WSOP final tables, all the way through their usual early next morning finish.

I mention the above to establish my credentials as a genuine poker junkie. I have seen many of the top poker pros at their best, and a few of them at their worst. I have seen aggressive players demolish final tables, and I have also seen aggressive players self destruct. Yesterday I observed a very workmanlike, competent defusing of an aggressive player, when Claude Cohen from Paris, France bested Freddie Havard to claim the 1997 $1500 limit Omaha championship. In my opinion, Claude consistently gave Freddie just enough rope to hang himself with. This was a classic match up between an aggressive player who appeared to be getting more than his share of good cards and good flops, and a solid counter-puncher who chose his own time and place to deliver lethal raises. Freddie Havard played the way that an aggressive chip leader is supposed to play, and it worked very well for him until Cohen started putting the fear of the Poker God into him. Havard continued his aggressive play, but when he was pushing a hand, I imagine that he was anticipating and fearful of a raise or a check raise that he knew was going to come at an inopportune time. I plan to take a closer look at the hand by hand play between these two when I have a little more time.

In the first four events, three ladies have made it to the final table, and two of them have won a WSOP championship. Today the crowd favorite, Maria Stern, began heads up play for the title with $185,000 in chips, while Adam Roberts had $200,000. In a very "interesting" confrontation that lasted about 45 minutes, Maria won 38 out of the 48 hands played, with only the first and last hands going to a showdown. It seemed that Roberts was experiencing an almost unbelievable run of poor cards, that saw him folding with regularity. On five occasions Roberts folded an Ace doorcard to Stern's bring in bet. This resulted in a steady exodus of his chips to the other side of the table.

I have postponed transcribing the first three hours of the 7 card stud final table until I get a power souce for a transcribing machine that was made available to me today. I have completed the transcription of the heads up play for the championship, and it is available for analysis.

*** Adam Roberts finishes 2nd and Marie Stern wins the $1500 Limit 7 card stud WSOP Championship at 8:09 PM.

Final Table Chip Standings - Seat Positions

Missing Picture Maria Stern, overcoming daunting odds, gained a major niche in World Series of Poker history when she captured the $l,500 buy in Seven Card Stud event, the second woman to win a title in the first four tournaments this year. For her impressive victory over 256 competitors she was awarded $140,708 and the prized gold WSOP winner's bracelet.

"I'm overwhelmed. I don't have words to describe my feelings," she said. "I feel like I'm living a dream come true." Stern, 57, was born in Cuba where she worked as a bilingual secretary for an advertising firm before leaving for Costa Rica where she lived for years with her husband Max. Just 48 hours earlier he finished third in the Razz event won by Linda Johnson.

Stern's triumph, loudly cheered by spectators, launched her all the way to third place on the WSOP Women's Top Money Winners list, with total earnings of $165,445. "I'm honored to be among such very fine players," she said.

Stern's final table was adventurous: With three players left she went all in three times and survived -- with a pair of aces, a pair of kings and a river flush to defeat Tom McEvoy's trips. When she and Adam Roberts went heads up, they were about even in chips. Losing the first, large pot, Stern found herself facing a chip lead of about three to one, but she steadily clawed her way back, twice winning hands with pocket aces and eventually amassing an unbeatable lead of her own. Roberts was finally all in but his pair of sixes fell to Stern's pair of eights and the title was hers.

Roberts, a regular stud player in California and Las Vegas, received $73,245 for this, his second runner-up finish at the World Series: three years ago he won $82,800 in the $5,000 Stud event.

Tom McEvoy, 52, the 1983 World Champion, took third place and prize money of $36,622, which brought him just shy of becoming the WSOP's l7th millionaire winner. His earnings now total $998,467. This was his 19th time in the money, which includes three gold bracelets won after his championship.

"I'm extremely disappointed," McEvoy said. Reflecting on the loss of his hefty chip lead at start of final table play, he said, "Yesterday I caught a lot of cards. I should have saved a few for today. Final table play was of very high caliber -- any one of several players could have won it." McEvoy, a poker author and columnist, has won about 20 major tournaments.

Fourth place prize money went to Joe Macchiaverna, 77, who has attended every World Series since the beginning in 1970. The $23,130 was the largest pay day of his 11 in-the-money finishes, but the retired jazz violinist said gloomily, "Today I played like an out-of-tune violinist. I enjoyed playing with them, they're all good players. I like tournaments, win or lose."

Kev Nettles, 37, a former poker dealer who now travels the international tournament circuit, finished fifth after miraculously reaching the final table: Two-thirds of the way through the first day of play, he said, "I got lucky. I caught a gutshot royal flush on the river which I needed to beat a made full house on sixth street. That got me here for my biggest tournament win and my first finish in the money at Binion's"

Ardell Willis took sixth place after surviving two all-in situations. Joe Holmes finished seventh, eliminated when he missed a flush in a big three-way pot. Cory Zeidman took eighth place when his pair of jacks didn't improve against Nettle's trip eights.

WSOP Women!

Never before have women captured two gold bracelets in open events at one World Series. With just four events concluded this year, women have already won $243,608.

In their two victories Linda Johnson and Maria Stern defeated 417 worthy opponents, practically all men.
