The Final Table Official Results The Evening Tournament |
The Comeback KidBy Mike PaulleClue: The winner of the tournament is mentioned somewhere in the next three paragraphs. There were 236 players today down from last year's 262. The total prize pool was $47,200. We know who the last one out today was. When Ira Levy went all-in, he was called by Brent Carter and called all-in by Jim Browder. Carter had the better low and Browder the better high to Levy the most severe fine on Ira, 19th place. To set up the final table, Rusty Hills headed for them in 11th when Nate Wolfson showed him a better hand. Boyd Ring with $300 and Walt Williams with $1,400 were very grateful.
Boyd Ring was so grateful to be at the final table, he left the first chance he got. All-in for his big blind, Boyd caught a 3 on the turn for trips. It was already too late as the 3 4 5 flop gave Bob Gammon the wheel. Nate Wolfson went all-in with A K 4 5. He made three pair. Jim Ipser didn't have a pair, he had a heart flush. Mona Quintara went all-in with the nut flush draw and an A 4. It was Bob Gammon with trip deuces that sent Mona moaning out in 8th. Walt Williams was all-in six or seven times in the last hour. Raising the big blind with K 6 6 3, J C Pearson called with A J 9 3 and caught Jacks and treys. "Don't call me Walter" Williams was 7th. Van Pxam went all-in with Q Q and was called by the suddenly hot Jim Browder with A K. When a King flopped, Van motored to the sidelines in 6th. Jim Ipser tried a A 10 8 7 against JC Pearson's K 3 3 2. Two deuces on board upset Jim in 5th. Brent Carter's cards went dead about the time that Jim Browder's got live. Finally all-in for his big blind, Brent couldn't catch the flush draw he needed against Browder's trip Aces. Carter needed some little liver pills after this one. JC Pearson has been making a nice living at the final tables of this year's Orleans Open. Here again, JC had the same problem Brent Carter had. He couldn't win a hand against Jim Browder. In disgust, Pearson went all-in with A K K 4. Browder, who was calling every pot at this point, did so with A J 8 6. When a 7 came on the river, it gave Browder both a gut shot straight and the best low with A 6. Heads up, Jim Browder had a 5-1 chip lead on Bob Gammon. Neither player mentioned a deal. Browder, who was all-in in the hand that put the 19th player out, was the comeback kid in this event. He put Gammon out and won the title with a pair of Jacks on the final hand when no low came.
11th-18th received $354 Rusty Hills, Lee Grove, Don Oakie, Skip Wilson, Fred Saliba, Ginger Snyder, John McCune and David Rabbi.
David Pacheco took 1st place in a heads up duel with Card Player Magazine's Chairman Barry Shulman. The final two players agreed to an even split of $5,550 and played for the TOC entry.
