Will This Event En(d) Right?

By Mike Paulle

When she goes on one of her patented rushes, the sun dims in the sky. She becomes a force of nature.

There were 231 players today down from last year's 242 for the Limit Hold'em event. There were 125 rebuys this year, 158 last. The total prize pool was $71,200.

This space is reserved for the winner of the daily booby prize--the player who finishes one out of the money. Today's player knows who they are, which is good because I don't know who they are.

To set up the final table, the bride lived, but Mike Kilbride died in 11th place with A 2 against Barbara Enright's Q 9 when a nine flopped.

Yohannes Muruz had the same problem as Connie did, a small stack, and Gene James had the same solution. Muruz went all-in with pocket Jacks. James played A Q, again, and turned a Queen to send Yohannes out in 9th. Yohannes was so mad he wanted to kick an Ethiopian.

Earl Hamb has been a frequent visitor to the final table in this year's Orleans Open. Raising all-in with A K, Hamb was called by Brenda Jacobus with pocket 9's. With the board Q Q 7 7, Earl hoped his Ace played, but was duked out by the 9's.

Mikhail Shandkin is having quite a year. Married on the day he won a World Series bracelet, he's had final tables both day and night in the Open. Going all-in with Q J, Mikhail was called by John Bonetti with Q 10. So far so good, until three spades came on board to give Bonetti the pot and send Mikhail out in 7th.

Males were starting to become an endanged species at this final table when Floyd Yost was duped by John Bonetti into betting all-in. When the flop came K Q, Bonetti checked. Floyd bet his 6's in a vain attempt to win a pot and stay alive. The crafty veteran, Bonetti, turned over K Q to make Yost toast.

For the second straight day the male Gene pool was depleted when Gene James made the mistake of going all-in with the best hand against Barbara Enright. Barbara was on one of her mind-bending rushes where she three bets with the worst hand to get heads up, and gets there time after time. James had A 4, Enright had K 6. Of course, a 6 flopped. Who didn't know that! Gene made like Jamestown and disappeared.

"Me against three women? I don't have a chance." John Bonetti said. He thought he was kidding!

Brenda Jacobus had come to the final table second in chips. But she couldn't pick up a hand and was whipsawed between two of the most aggressive players in the game, Barbara Enright and John Bonetti. Brenda called John Bonetti's raise from the small blind with A 10. Bonetti had 8 7 of Hearts and caught an 8 on the flop. Jacobus left in 4th.

Barbara Enright was catching everything but malaria, and it was John Bonetti's chips that were suffering. Finally going all-in with Q 9 of Clubs, John caught his nine on the river. But that was after three spades came on board to give Barbara Enright the nut flush. What had promised to be a battle of titans, turned out to be one-sided instead as Enright out-Bonetti'ed the great John Bonetti.

This has been the Year of the Woman in Limit Hold'em at the Orleans Open. Jennifer Harmon and Shelley Carr went head to head for the title last week. Now it was Barbara Enright and Maureen Feduniak.

Maureen came to the final table with only $6,800 in chips and hardly ever had many more. But her quiet play, as the storm roiled around her, was commendable. With a 15-1 chip disadvantage to Enright, the end was inevitable. On the last hand, Maureen Feduniak--wife of Bob Feduniak the Seven Card Stud winner--had K 4. Enright had 5 2 of Clubs. Both a 5 and a 4 flopped and when a 4 turned it gave Maureen trip 4's. But it was the wrong 4. The 4 of Clubs gave Barbara Enright a flush and the well-deserved title.
